AUTHOR COMMENT: ‘A’ or ‘An’, that is the question
When I’m not working I read
a fair amount, and I enjoy the big names just like everyone else. So I was surprised when I saw one of these
big names referring to ‘an SUV’. I
thought it must be a typo but it was done more than once so I guess it must
have been on purpose.
So, I was reading another
book by another author and guess what? The same thing.
Now, SUV stands for ‘Sports
Utility Vehicle’ so in my view it should always be ‘a SUV’ and not ‘an SUV’. Surely you climb aboard a sports utility vehicle
and not an sports utility vehicle? You go to a sports event, not an sports
event.
Funnily enough, Word
spellcheck highlights ‘an’ when you type ‘an sports utility vehicle’ but not when you type‘an
SUV’.
What do you think? Am I
wrong?
